The Oldest Life Forms on Planet Earth Cling to Life Atop California's White Mountains.
Bristlecone Pines in the Schulman Grove of the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, White Mountains, California. Ancient Bristlecone Pine trees (Pinus longaeva) are the oldest living things on Earth. Although native also to Nevada and Utah, the oldest specimens (over 4,700 years old) are found in Eastern California's White Mountains. For trees such as these that have suffered the loss of a major root, the sector of the trunk supported by that root also dies, along with its branches. In time, the affected sector's bark falls off, leaving exposed trunkwood. Some gnarled old trees possess just a thin strip of living bark to sustain a single living branch and its needles.
