A farewell-to-spring (Clarkia amoena) flower begins to open at sunrise. This wildflower, native to Western North America, produces showy salmon-colored two-inch blossoms on three-foot tall stems.
California Jimson Weed (Datura wrightii) produces beautiful large trumpet-shaped flowers that are generally white to pinkish purple. The plant is highly poisonous and its abuse has caused many deaths particularly among experimenting teenagers. However, Native Americans (as well as Eastern Indian, Caribbean, and Mexican cultures) continue to use Datura as an herbal medicine. California bush sunflowers (Encelia californica) share this coastal space. This early Spring bloom was photographed at the northern edge of the Santa Monica Mountains near Point Mugu State Park, Ventura County, California.
Parrot's beak (Lotus berthelotii) blossom close-up. This plant is native to Tenerife, largest of the Canary Islands, where it has long been considered an endangered species. Its attractive silvery green needle-like trailing foliage and brilliant scarlet-hued flame-like 1.5 inch flowers make this plant a sought-after exotic. This image was made with a 100 mm macro lens.

Bladderpod (Cleome isomeris) is a native shrub well suited to washes and bluffs of arid coastal Southern California. Yellow flowers produced much of the year highlight the prominent large, inflated, pendulous seed pod housing pea-like seeds favored by birds and once used as food by native Indians.

Yellow petals flushed with orange surround a dark-brown central cone. Popular with butterflies in summer; birds favor its seeds in autumn.
