Bladderpod (Cleome isomeris) is a native shrub well suited to washes and bluffs of arid coastal Southern California. Yellow flowers produced much of the year highlight the prominent large, inflated, pendulous seed pod housing pea-like seeds favored by birds and once used as food by native Indians.
Autumn sage (Salvia greggii 'Red') is a woody shrub native to Texas and Mexico. Once established it tolerates full sun and high heat; and will suffer from over-watering and fertilizer. From spring through autumn, it produces many one-inch crimson flowers favored by butterflies and hummingbirds.
