Bristlecone Pines in the Schulman Grove of the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, White Mountains, California. Ancient Bristlecone Pine trees (Pinus longaeva) are the oldest living things on Earth. Although native also to Nevada and Utah, the oldest specimens (over 4,700 years old) are found in Eastern California's White Mountains. This photo shows the weathered grain of trees exposed to the harsh elements for centuries.

For trees such as these that have suffered the loss of a major root, the sector of the trunk supported by that root also dies, along with its branches. In time, the affected sector's bark falls off, leaving exposed trunkwood. Some gnarled old trees possess just a thin strip of living bark to sustain a single living branch and its needles.

Although native also to Nevada and Utah, the oldest specimens (over 4,700 years old) are found in Eastern California's White Mountains at subalpine elevations ranging from 9,500 to 11,500 feet. This photo also shows the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains 20 miles distant on the horizon.

Due to the cold dry climate of the White Mountains, dead bristlecone pines may remain intact for thousands of years.
